Download drivers for VAIO UX computers
Here’s a collection of drivers and various utilities for the Sony VAIO UX Micro PCs.
Get started by selecting the operating system you are using (or going to use) on your VAIO UX from the list below.

Windows XP VAIO-UX drivers

Windows XP is a commonly used operating system on the VAIO UX computers. It was pre-installed on the earlier models, and most newer models can be downgraded, often resulting in better performance than on Vista.
For Windows XP, Sony released a lot of individual driver files back in the day, each requiring manual installation. The official drivers are no longer available on the Sony website, but have been archived since.
Also, there were unofficial driver packs, which were created by the former community of micropctalk.com (a site which is no longer online, but user Sull86 created the driver packs).
These driver packs contain a combination of all drivers needed to get your UX system up and running and have ordered folders for easier installation. These driver packs have been brought back online for download using copies from the Internet Archive.
Compatibility
The XP driver packs are compatible with all VAIO UX models, even those which shipped with Vista. This is thanks to a clever trick applied called the “model.txt patch”, which removes the check added by Sony to verify if your model was actually shipped with XP
Downloads
You can download the various VAIO UX driver packs below:
Version 2.3 (RECOMMENDED)
The most up-to-date driver pack which I found online at the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. This is the most complete set of Windows XP drivers ever made. All drivers are stored in folders numbered for the correct order of installation. When reinstalling windows, install all drivers in the order in which the folders are numbered. Otherwise, install the single driver you’ll need. Please read the instructions by clicking on the title below, before clicking on the blue button “Download” button.
WWAN Add-On Pack
If you have a model of the VAIO UX from the United States with a Wireless WAN / Cingular EDGE module, install this driver pack after having installed a regular driver pack to get support for cellular connectivity.
Version 2.0 (Older)
Version 2.0 is a previous version of the same driver pack, and is the one I got on CD with my own computer. It is slightly older than version 2.3, but should still work fine. All drivers are stored in folders numbered for the correct order of installation. When reinstalling windows, install all drivers in the order in which the folders are numbered. Otherwise, install the single driver you’ll need.
Version 3 (BETA)
Version 3.0 (Beta) is the other driver pack I got on CD with my own computer. It contains a single executable file, which auto-installs *ALL* drivers at once. Therefore you can only use it on a clean Windows installation, without having installed any Sony drivers before. Cautious: Not tested by me!
Custom Windows XP install disk maker
This is a handy program for advanced users: You can use this to create and burn your own Windows XP Driver CD with the specific drivers and applications you’ll need!
Windows Vista VAIO-UX drivers
Windows Vista is a less popular operating system to use on the VAIO UX. Even though a lot of newer models shipped with Vista Business out of the box, it ran very slow compared to XP. Therefore, a lot of users wanted to downgrade their VAIO back to XP. Upgrading is, while obviously not popular back in the day, also possible: most XP models can be upgraded, provided they have enough RAM and free disk space.
For Windows Vista, back in the day, Sony offered individual driver files on their website. These are no longer available, but have been archived since.
In contrast to Windows XP and Windows 7, no community-built driver packs were created. This was probably due to the fact that almost nobody wanted to upgrade a Vaio computer that shipped with Windows XP to Windows Vista, and maybe also because a lot of computers already shipped with Windows Vista from the factory and thus did not need any drivers to be installed.
To help you get the drivers installed, I have created a Vista driver pack myself, based on the drivers still online at https://drivers.eu. It contains most of the drivers and applications, but not as many as in the Windows XP driver packs. The Vista pack should give you a decent experience when not installing Vista from a recovery disk or the built-in recovery partition.
For the best experience, you may consider using a Recovery Disk or the Recovery Partition instead.
Bypass “not intended for use with your computer model” error
If any of the Vista drivers give an error that it is “not intended for use with your computer model”, please follow the instructions on this page to get around it:
Windows 7 VAIO-UX drivers
Windows 7 was not installed by default on any VAIO UX computer, but most computers could be updated if you had 1GB RAM and enough free disk space. After the debacle with Vista, many users were eager to upgrade their VAIO from XP to 7 and it could actually perform quite well.
Windows 7 offers the optimal combination of an operating system that performs well on the VAIO UX, and is at least somewhat modern that you can install some newer programs on it. If starting fresh, this is an ideal choice to install.
For Windows 7, Sony released a combination of Vista drivers and some updated official drivers back in the day. These are unfortunately no longer available on their website, but have been archived since.
Since many people did upgrade their computer to Windows 7 back in the day, the community created a handy driver pack to install all drivers on a clean installation of Windows 7. Similar to the XP driver packs, this was developed by forum user Sull86 of micropctalk.com (a site which is also no longer online), and is very complete in terms of included drivers & applications.
This driver pack has been brought back online for download using a copy from the Internet Archive.
Please read the instructions by clicking on the title below, before clicking on the blue “Download” button.
Bypass “not intended for use with your computer model” error
If any of the Windows 7 drivers give an error that it is “not intended for use with your computer model”, please follow the instructions on this page to get around it:
Windows 8 / 8.1 VAIO UX drivers
Windows 8 was released in 2012, about 5-6 years after the introduction of the VAIO UX. It was never officially supported.
However, there have been some attempts by users to install Windows 8 and 8.1 on the VAIO UX, mostly compelled by the idea of running the Windows Store (Metro) apps on a touch-screen device.
Generally though, Windows 8 made the computer ran slower than XP or 7. It was not really designed for these newer versions of Windows, and due to the screen resolution being lower than 1024×768, it was (at least, for a very long time) not possible to run these apps, borking the concept of a touchscreen computer with Windows 8 apps. Therefore, it is highly recommended to instal Windows 7 on the computer.
Regarding drivers on Windows 8, you can generally try to use the Windows 7 driver pack. Most drivers should still work, but it is recommended to install a few at a time and reboot, to see if nothing was broken.
Windows 10 VAIO UX drivers
Windows 10, released in 2015, is generally too new and too resource-heavy for the VAIO UX. While you technically can install the 32-bit version, and users have attempted to install it, do not expect the machine to run well. It will be very slow and some features may not work at all. It is highly recommended to stick to Windows 7 if you want the computer to be somewhat usable.
Also good to know is that Windows 10 has gotten a lot more ‘bloated’ over the years, meaning that the original Windows 10 version from 2015 will likely perform much better than the 22H2 version of Windows 10 you’ll be using today.
If wanting to install drivers on Windows 10, please use the Windows 7 driver pack. Most drivers should still work, but it is recommended to install a few at a time and reboot, to see if nothing was broken.
Windows 11 VAIO UX drivers
Windows 11 cannot run on most VAIO UX computers, unless you plan to make some serious hardware modifications and use to the original launch version of Windows 11 only (21H2).
The reason for this, is that Windows 11 requires a 64-bit processor, and almost all VAIO UX computers contain a 32-bit processor. Only the last model, the VGN-UX490 with Core 2 Solo U2200, contains a 64-bit processor.
If you’re in for an adventure, watch this video of Janus Cycle in which he replaces the processor with a Core 2 Duo, which is a 64-bit processor, and installs Windows 11.
Windows 11 version 24H2 and newer have another roadblock: These require a 64-bit processor which also supports the POPCNT instruction. That is something even the Core 2 Duo does not support. This marks the end of support for any chip that can be fitted / soldered inside the VAIO UX, making the series incompatible with any future versions of Windows.
